My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
This book was really good! The story line was extremely unique- a breath of fresh air.
Going into this book I didn’t know what to expect what so ever. I didn’t even know the premise of the book! All I knew is that I heard people raving about this book non-stop and just had to read it. I’m so glad I did.
Ready Player One takes place in the 21st century, about 40 years from now. In the book, planet earth is almost completely destroyed and reality completely sucks. It’s a good thing they have a way to get away from it. It all started when a guy named Halliday invented the most amazing video game of all time. The OASIS, which evolved into a way of living instead of being just a game, took over everything- everyone started to go to school online, to work thorough their consoles and even interacting with people became a thing you only did on the OASIS. Basically, it became their alternate reality.
Then, out of nowhere- the creator of the OASIS, Halliday, passed away. In his will he left the greatest video game created yet. A series of riddles and challenges that will get the winner everything. Control over the OASIS, the entire fortune Halliday made over the years which amounts to more than 50 billion dollars and world-wide recognition.
Ready Player One follows Wade Watts (or Pazival), a teenage boy who dreams of winning the competition. In the story, we get to encounter some quite amazing characters (I especially liked Aech), fun 80’s references and a super cute love story.
I loved Cline’s writing style. I felt like I was a part of the hunt and could totally see the world actually evolving to what was described in the book. It felt realistic, while keeping a fun unexpected twist to the whole plot.
I really liked the characters, I felt like, as a teenage girl who spends most of her time online, I could totally relate to them. The plot was interesting and quite unique- I was a little surprised when I just started reading the book that it was mainly about video games, but I found that I really enjoyed it. My inner geek totally came out.
I think that if you’re a fan of video games, computers, technology, the 80’s or anything of that sort, you will absolutely love this book. But even if you’re not necessarily a fan of these things, which I didn’t know I was prior to reading this book, give it a try- you will not be disappointed.
